Adjusting to a tight game

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

In order to become a successful poker player you need to be a master of the ability to change gears. In this article we will go over some of the strategies that can be applied to a tight game.

Many poker players make the assumption that they will not be able to make any money playing at tight tables, they are wrong. A good poker player will be able to adjust his game to make him a winning player even at tight tables.

A tight player will always be making the mistake of folding way to many hands, this is something that you can take advantage of and take down a lot of small pots. As they will be folding a lot more than a loose player you can raise with a wider range of hands then normal and in this way you will be taking down a lot of small pots. Eventually the tight player will pick up a good hand and call your bets but by then you will be playing with the money that you have been winning in all the small pots and not having to risk the money you initially brought to the table.

Try out this strategy without risking any of your own money by getting a no deposit poker bonus to your favourite online poker room.

Online Poker Continues to Grow in 2009

Monday, April 13th, 2009

Even though the current recession is affecting the land based casinos it seems that the online poker rooms are not being affected, at least not in a negative way. According to the numbers at PokerScout.com online poker is continuing to grow by about 30% per year. Not all of the poker rooms on the internet are doing great though, there are a couple of big rooms that are starting to see their numbers drop but this is most probably not due to the recession.

The biggest poker room is still PokerStars who recently celebrated getting their 20th Millionth customer and they are growing more and more for each day. They are now also allowed to accept players coming from Italy on their Italian site PokerStars.it.

FullTilt Poker is the second largest poker room and they are also growing on a daily basis just like the Cake Poker Network and the Entraction Network. Entraction has grown a lot lately and this is mainly due to the fact that the poker rooms that were banned from the iPoker Network, NoIQPoker.com and CarlosPoker.com moved over to Entraction. Cake Poker is growing a lot since they have taken over all the poker rooms from the old Gold Chip Network that is no longer around. But it has to be said that Cake Poker are probably also growing due to the fact that they are offering some really innovative promotions with their Gold Card system at Cake Poker and Gold Chip Rewards.

On the losing side of things we find poker rooms like Bodog Poker, Everest Poker and Betfair Poker. Bodog Poker is the biggest loser on the list and this is probably due to the fact that they have been having a lot of problems paying their US customers as they have had their bank accounts in the US confiscated several times. It also didn’t help that they lost a law suit involving their domain name and had to change it from Bodog.com to NewBodog.com and finally to BodogLife.com which is their current name.

If you take a look at the list of winners from the last week FullTilt Poker is the biggest winner when it comes to player traffic. Last Sunday they broke their own record when they hit 18.565 players sitting at the cash game tables at the same time. Even the IPN Network (Boss Media) had a good week and managed to break their old record when they had 4509 players playing at the same time at the cash game tables.

It will be interesting to see if the recession will ever get to online poker or if it will keep on going strong. It has been a couple of years now that people have been saying that the interest for online poker will die out but it has yet to happen.

Finnish Government Launches Online Poker Room

Monday, April 6th, 2009

Raha-automaattiyhdistys (RAY) is a gambling company owned by the government in Finland. They have monopoly on slot machines and other casino games that are put out in night clubs in Finland. RAY also own and run the casino in Helsinki. They are now also planning to launch a Finnish online poker room to attract all the Finnish poker players to their brand.

RAY was founded in 1938 and they are the only gambling company who are licensed to run gambling operations in Finland. If a night club owner wants to open up a roulette table in their club they will need to go through RAY who will put the table in place and use their own employers to run it. They also offer slot machines to the night clubs and cut them in on a bit of the profit for being allowed to place them in the night clubs. The profit from these machines goes to charitable causes and some of the money is used to get help for problem gamblers.

The Finnish minister of culture and sports, Staffan Wallin, announced that RAY is going to launch their own online poker room within short. All the technical preparations have been made and they expect to be able to launch before the end of the year. The government of Finland will need to change the current law a bit before they are able to be able to fully launch and accept players.

Finland have around 120.000 online poker players so there is definitely a market for a new poker room but it will also be very hard to try to get customers since not many new poker rooms have had a lot of success after the poker boom 5 years ago. It will obviously be very hard for them to compete with poker rooms like PokerStars and FullTilt Poker.

Setback for New EU-Rules to Regulate Online Gambling

Friday, March 13th, 2009

The members of the EU-parliament have cast their votes regarding a bill on online gambling. In the bill it is suggested that the online gambling market should be able to be regulated by the individual countries instead of having a common set of rules for the whole European Union. This bill got 544 supporting votes and only 36 votes against it.

The bill in question was written by the Danish politician Christel Schaldemose. In the bill she is pointing out a lot of the problems with gambling in general but mostly the problems with online gambling are pointed out. The organized crime is making a lot of money from online gambling with rigged games, credit card frauds and money laundering. Gambling is also a big risk for the underage kids as it has now become possible to gamble using your mobile phone or even through your Xbox-360.

In the bill Schaldemose also proposes a couple of methods that can be used to limit the losses that can be made online by people with a gambling problem. It is also suggested that they need to look further in to the possibilities of being able to limit the amount of money that people can lose on gambling. It is suggested that people would only be able to deposit at online gambling sites using a pre paid card that can only be bought in a store. In this way you would not be able to sit at home drunk and alone and decide to gamble away all your savings.

In this bill it is also suggested that the individual countries would be allowed to decide over their own gambling market.

The critics are saying that instead of protecting the individuals this bill is there to protect the monopoly that many of the countries have set in place. Sweden, Italy and Norway are some of the countries who have their gambling business run by the government. The critics are giving the UK as an example of a liberal and non regulated market where the individual gamblers still are protected and the gambling companies contribute towards creating awareness about problem gambling.

Surely this will not be the end of this story but it is a setback for those of us who really want an open market for online gambling with clear rules and guidelines within the EU.

PokerStars.com Reaches 20 Million Players

Monday, March 9th, 2009

The online poker room PokerStars.com was founded in 2001 and since then they have constantly been growing and today they are by far the biggest poker room on the internet. PartyPoker.com used to be the largest online poker room once upon a time but when the UIGEA hit the US they were no longer able to accept US players while poker rooms like PokerStars and FullTilt Poker continued to accept players coming from the US.

Last week PokerStars signed up their 20 Millionth player. This player is from Slovakia and he is playing under the alias “piposko“. As a reward for the 20 Millionth player they gave him a $215 tournament ticket so that he could play in the Sunday Million for free.

20 Million players is really a lot for an online poker room and just to compare with another online phenomenon World of Warcraft (WoW) has 11 Million users. On the other hand a site like Facebook.com has 160 Million registered user so it seems like there are still a couple of people left to refer to the site before they reach the size of Facebook.

Steve Martin Talks About Online Poker

Thursday, February 5th, 2009

Steve Martin is probably well known to all of you who have seen movies like “The Three Amigos“, “Roxanne” and the later versions of “The Pink Panther“.

On the David Letterman show on Monday he revealed that he used to play poker on the internet “when it used to be legal“. It is still legal to play online poker in the US but that is for another topic.

After one long session of online poker he needed an Ambien to help him get to sleep. As a result of this drug he went on a mean winning streak and he made a lot of profit from his “Ambien Experience“.

I have included a link to the clip in this post for all of you to see how to become a profitable poker player.
